As well as investigating a new line, taking inspiration from a blend of ancient east African and middle eastern tablets, scrolls and other embellishments, the painting was as much an investigation into materials. Created from a blend of ultramarine pigments and handrolled vermillion pastels, the colour scheme was also interested in alerting our attention to the introduction of blue into our visual culture.
